SBA: The Ann Arbor Events

The Start of a New Era:

After Hour venues and late night dance parties had come to a screeching hault in 1997. The unique Detroit scene had run its course, and with a little help from the Detroit Deputy Chief of Police, the Detroit Fire Chief and a special task force patrolling the city on a nightly basis looking for illegal dance venues, it was time to move on.

Superbadass Productions (SBA) had been enjoying a crossover culture with Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. New styles of music formed high-breds between electronica and analog indie rock. Space rock musicians and street culture performers were created a new compelling landscape of entertainment and exhibition for a future generation. In the early nineties venues such as The Lab (Closed by police in March 1993) and Elephanthaus continued a long standing Ann Arbor tradition of counter-culture cultivation followed by SBA favorites the Green Room, the Miss Bliss house and the Fourth Street Art Gallery.

Superbadass Productions invited these progressive performers to join popular Detroit acts and began a series of annual high-production events including, Fashion For Food, Sensual and the Cerebral and Valentine.
